Community members will have access to a government issued identification with a debit card function, helping them integrate into Oakland's financial and civic community.

Victor, a member of our Oakland Workers’ Collective, has been eagerly waiting to get his Oakland ID (pictured below). He, along with other clients and staff of Street Level, attended the Oakland ID Inauguration today where the ribbon cutting ceremony took place. Street Level is one of many other grassroots organizations that advocated for the expedient implementation of the City ID. Over the last few years, our community and staff have fought for the passing and implementing of the Oakland ID and talked to reporters from KTVU, Oakland North, and Univision about this issue (click on links to view articles). Thanks to all the city officials, organizations, and community members who pushed for this resource, Oakland residents–including immigrants–will have access to a government issued identification with a debit card function, helping them integrate into Oakland’s financial and civic community.

Street Level Health Project celebrated 10 years as a grassroots safety net provider for underserved uninsured immigrants in the Bay Area.

On Thursday September 27, 2012 Street Level Health Project celebrated 10 years as a grassroots safety net provider for underserved uninsured immigrants in the Bay Area. Local champions for health equity including District 9 Representative Congresswoman Barbara Lee and The California Endowment’s Dr. Anthony Iton made speeches highlighting the organization’s innovative health model that both increases health access and addresses root causes of poor health among marginalized populations of low-wage, monolingual, immigrant workers.

The celebration, which took place at the Oakland Museum of California, recognized community leaders who have supported immigrant communities in Alameda County in the areas of health and justice. Recipients included La Clinica de la Raza, Centro Legal de la Raza, and former director of Alameda County Health Care Services Agency David Kears.

The theme of the anniversary event was “Celebrating Community, Hope, and Dreams”.

Growing up in the San Antonio and Fruitvale Districts of Oakland I saw day laborers at the corner and knew about the issues that they dealt with. Their issues would have lingered and continued unbeknown to many residents, unless someone took action. That’s where Street Level Health Project comes in. They took action and today provide services and programs where other agencies did not or could not. They speak for the disenfranchised, for the newly arrived in this country, for the day laborers. They are a health portal that also advocates for system change, giving voice to immigrant/refugee population.
