Building Community
English Classes
We offer a hot lunch every week, along with
time for open conversation about urban
immigrants’ lives, struggles and strategies
for maintaining well-being.  This discussion
group is held on Mondays from 12 pm to
2 pm and provides a space for immigrants
to discuss their lives in a safe and
supportive environment.  Self-help, mutual
assistance and community-building are all
goals of this popular forum.  Discussions
are held in Spanish (with translation
assistance for Mam speakers).
Weekly Lunches & Community-Building Meetings
Every Wednesday we offer English as a Second Language classes from 2 pm to 4 pm.
Movie and Discussion Nights
The first and third Fridays of the month are
set aside for Spanish language movies.
We select movies that are both entertaining
and pertinent to the lives and concerns of
new immigrants.  Followed by lively
discussions and snacks, they provide an
opportunity for fun and relaxation as well as
a chance to reflect and build community.
Women’s Knitting and Crochet Circle
This small project was created for
women in the local area to: 1) build
community; 2) enhance women’s self-
esteem; and 3) develop and learn a skill.
Members include lifetime knitters as well
as beginners.  During these meetings,
the group members are able to bond,
teach, help, and learn from each other.
The knitting group meets Tuesdays and
Fridays 11 am – 1 pm.  Community
donations provide supplies for this
project.
Holiday Events
Special lunches and events during holiday periods
help provide a sense of community for new
residents.
